The Fédération Internationale du Recyclage (FIR) represents the European recycling industry of Construction & Demolition Waste (C&DW) and Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA). FIR has as its aim to raise the level of recycling in Europe. Its members are national recycling associations and individual recycling companies. FIR has members in nine European countries and in Mexico.
Members of FIR recycle more than 200 million tonnes of inert C&DW annually and more than 30 million tonnes of IBA. They produce the highest volume of recycled materials in Europe, substituting primary resources.
A platform for mineral waste recycling
Mineral waste constitutes the biggest waste stream in Europe and elsewhere. FIR is committed to managing this waste in the best way. A key aspect of our work is to provide a platform where all parties interested in mineral waste meet. Whether its about policies, legislation, standardization, technical items or applications – all issues are discussed and experience and knowledge is exchanged.
70% Recycling in each Member State is feasible
Based on experiences in several Member States, we think that at least 70% recycling of C&DW is feasible in any Member State. If Member States are willing, this can be achieved in a couple of years. For that we have developed a blueprint.
