Utilizing the resource

IBA is a rich source of materials that can be recovered. Utilizing this resource is what members of FIR do. A small but very valuable constituent of IBA is metal. Ferro and non-ferrous metals are recovered by such techniques as magnets and eddy current separators. The inert, mineral part of IBA can be processed into aggregates that are fit for use in road construction and in special cases also in concrete. There is a vast amount of experience in such countries as Germany and The Netherlands.

Incineration of 1 tonne of waste results in approx. 350 of ashes.

Case study

IGAM member Remex operates the biggest IBA processing plant of Europe. The plant, situated in The Netherlands, processes more than 650.000 tonnes of IBA annually. Using innovative technologies the recovery of metals has been extensively optimized. Using a double washing process severe environmental requirements are met with. IBA aggregates (IBAA) are used safely to replace sand and gravel for instance in road construction.  One fraction of IBA is upgraded using inhouse technologies to improve construction characteristics. This product is applied in asphalt and concrete production.
